Add a variety of ingredients to these versatile cookies--chocolate chips, nuts, toffee--whatever you love best.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all purpose flour, salt and baking soda together then set aside. In a separate bowl, cream shortening, sugars and vanilla. Beat until smooth, add eggs, and mix well. Slowly add flour, salt and baking soda. Mix with shortening and sugar. Add a little flour, mix on high, then add milk and remaining flour. Mix until smooth. Add chips and nuts then mix well. On a cooking stone, spoon a teaspoon of mix. Bake for exactly 12 minutes. Remove from oven and let cookies set 5-7 minutes. With a spatula, carefully remove cookies from stone, and move to waxed paper or a rack to finish cooling.

Notes from the Cook: Cooking the cookies on a stone will cause them to cook evenly, and helps give the chewy taste. Also, if you leave mix on stove, before you spoon the next batch, stir up mix. Melted chocolate will give the cookies a swirled look. If you need to make a lot of cookies, you can double or triple recipe before adding chips or nuts. After mixing main ingredients, divide into separate bowls. Use chocolate chips, nuts, white chips, butterscotch chips, caramel balls (made for baking), toffee chips, in any combination you like for a great variety.
