Make this candy for gifts at the holidays. You can vary the flavor by adding your favorite flavoring or extract.
Butter an 8" square pan. In a 2 quart saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water, cornstarch, butter, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, to 250 F (hard ball stage). Remove from heat, stir in vanilla, and pour into pan. When cool enough to handle, pull taffy until satiny, light in color and stiff. If tacky, butter hands. Pull into long strips, 1/2 inch wide. Cut into 1" pieces with scissors. Wrap in waxed paper or plastic wrap.
